Winter star returns to Lingfield

 Nov 11 2016

Last season's all-weather star Grendisar will kick off his latest campaign in the Listed Churchill Stakes at Lingfield on Saturday night.

The Marco Botti-trained six-year-old enjoyed a brilliant run of form last season which included a strong finishing second behind Let's Go in last year's renewal. However the slow early pace was really against his hold up style that day and it was no surprise to see him subsequently hit a run of form which included wins in the Listed Winter Derby Trial, the Group 3 Winter Derby and the Easter Classic. His form over the 2000m at Lingfield is second to none with six wins and five placed efforts from 11 starts. Grendisar has been kept fresh and will once again be aimed at the same targets for which he sets a high standard.

Saturday's racing really gets the all-weather season underway with a bang on a card that also features the Listed Golden Rose Stakes. Ed Walker's Aeolus heads here off the back of a great run when just being denied by Growl in the Listed Wentworth Stakes last weekend. The winner had previously run second in the Group 1 Champions Sprint and while Aeolus had historically shown all his best form with cut in the ground, Saturday's run showed he can handle different conditions. This will be his first run on a synthetic surface but with a sharp turn of foot he should be well suited to it.
