Ribchester hard to oppose in Lockinge

 May 19 2017

Saturday night’s Al Shaqab Lockinge Stakes is the highlight of the international cards on Sky Racing and the top-class miler Ribchester can return to the UK with a second Group 1 victory.

Last year’s 2000 Guineas winner Galileo Gold will be looking to give his owners a success in the race they sponsor but despite beating Ribchester into third in last season’s classic, the latter improved past him later in the season.

Ribchester’s breakthrough Group 1 success came in the Prix Jacques Le Marois at Deauville where Galileo Gold finished eight and then comfirmed that form when the pair finished second and fifth behind Minding in a superb renewal of the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes at Ascot.

The Richard Fahey-trained Ribchester returned with a fine third in the Group 1 Dubai Turf at Meydan in March where the extra 200 metres saw him just worn down late on and the return to a mile will be ideal for the progressive son of Iffraaj.

Aidan O’Brien’s Somehow is the only filly in the field and will be looking to step up from a Group 2 win at Newmarket and while that looked a below-par renewal she is still improving.

Among the remaining runners Queen Elizabeth II third Lightning Spear and the progressive Aclaim are set to make their seasonal reappearance in a quality renewal of the Group 1 contest.
