Royal Ascot Day 2 Previews

 Jun 20 2017

R1 Jersey Stakes

Le Brivido won his first two for the great Andre Fabre before just being outstayed on soft ground in the French 2000 Guineas after looking the winner. His conqueror Brametot has since won the Prix Du Jockey Club.

Beat The Bank won on his only start in Ireland before moving to Andrew Balding and remaining unbeaten with a win in a strong race at Newmarket. He has big improvement to come and has been working well for his in-form stable.

Daban beat subsequent German 1000 Guineas winner Unforgetable Filly in the Nell Gwyn over this trip before a fine third in the 1000 Guineas at Newmarket. She’s by Acclamation out of a Whipper mare so this is likely to be her trip.

Dream Castle was second to Barney Roy in the Greenham before not getting the run of the race when fifth in the 2000 Guineas.

Selections: 9 Le Brivido, 3 Beat The Bank, 5 Daban, 6 Dream Castle

R2 Queen Mary Stakes

Happy Like A Fool was impressive on debut in the US and represents Wesley Ward who has won the last two renewals as well as in 2009. Ryan Moore is booked and Ward has stated that she is the pick of his juveniles and has shown more talent than any other juvenile he’s trained.

Heartache could not have been more impressive when winning by six lengths on debut at Bath and is held in high regard by Clive Cox who has a great team of juveniles.

Chica La Habana put in a tremendous late surge to win at Beverley on debut for Robert Cowell who is a master trainer with sprinters. This is a big step up but she’ll be suited by the fast tempo.

Mrs Gallagher rallied when headed to win in a good time on debut here after showing plenty of early speed.

Selections: 8 Happy Like A Fool, 9 Heartache, 2 Chica La Habana, 15 Mrs Gallagher

R3 Duke Of Cambridge Stakes

Laugh Aloud has been hugely impressive on her last two starts and demolished a Group 3 field at Epsom in a fast time. She loves quick ground and showed at Epsom she doesn’t have to lead.

Qemah won the Group 1 Coronation Stakes at last year’s Royal Ascot before winning a Group 1 at Deauville. She disappointed on her last race of the season at Leopardstown but wasn’t quite at her best first up at Lingfield. She looked to need the run and had a troubled passage and remains a class act.

Usherette is last year’s winner and was supplemented for this. The fast ground is a concern but Ascot is a track she may get away with it and looked to be coming back to form at Chantilly last start.

Mix And Mingle was aimed specifically for the Chartwell at Lingfield where she beat Qemah. She may struggle to comfirm the form over this extra trip.

Selections: 7 Laugh Aloud, 10 Qemah, 15 Usherette, 8 Mix And Mingle

R4 Prince Of Wales’s Stakes

Highland Reel disappointed in Meydan behind Jack Hobbs but Aidan O’Brien’s brilliant globetrotter was back to form on better ground at Epsom. Although he’s arguably better over further he could easily boss this field from the front on ground he loves.

Jack Hobbs returned to form when third in the Champion Stakes here and then was trained specifically for the Dubai Sheema Classic where he produced a superb win.

Ulysses returned in style in the Group 3 Gordon Richards at Sandown. He’s always looked like a potential improver with age and could have a big season.

Scottish improved significantly last season culminating in a big second in the Caulfield Cup. It’s a tough assignment first up but it would be no surprise to see him right up there.

Selections: 2 Highland Reel, 3 Jack Hobbs, 7 Ulysses, 6 Scottish

R5 Royal Hunt Cup

Hors De Combat returned from Meydan with a good second at Bath and then caught the eye over a trip too short in the Victoria Cup. He’s very talented and while he doesn’t win often is on an attractive mark and he’s a huge price.

Abe Lincoln only just failed to win the Brittania Stakes at last year’s meeting on just his fifth start. That run would make him the leading hope. He sustained an injury but has been the subject of good reports from Jeremy Noseda.

Banksea ran a career best after being gelded when winning the Spring Cup at Newbury. He’s still lightly raced so he should still have plenty of improvement to come compared to most.

Bossy Guest has finished close to Banksea in the Spring Cup and Fastnet Tempest in the Victoria Cup without getting the run of the race. He’s on a really attractive mark and cold reverse form at big odds.

Selections: 10 Hors De Combat, 23 Abe Lincoln, 8 Banksea, 11 Bossy Guest

R6 Sandringham Handicap

Gymnaste had won a Chester maiden in a fast time before being incredibly unlucky at Kempton on handicap debut. That again was a quick time and she has the look of a very well handicapped filly for John Gosden.

Queen Of Time won the same race at Goodwood that last year’s Sandringham winner Persuasive took. She showed a smart turn of foot and it was a considerable step forward.

Dancing Breeze won a hot maiden on debut at Newmarket and while she disappointed in Listed company and was fifth on handicap debut at Sandown it could be that she needs quick ground.

Sibilance was third in a Listed race on her third run and first on turf at York. Ralph Beckett thought she’d be a Group horse early on and her Kempton conditions win is smart form.

Selections: 17 Gymnaste, 21 Queen Of Time, 20 Dancing Breeze, 16 Sibilance
