Royal Ascot Day 1 Previews

 Jun 20 2017

R1 Queen Anne Stakes

Ribchester is world ranked number 3 and for good reason. He improved massively in his three-year-old campaign which included a French Group 1 win and a second in a superb renewal of the QEII at Ascot. He returned from Meydan with a blistering win in the Lockinge.

Lightning Spear is often underated and was only a length behind Ribchester in the QEII. He was a fine second in the Lockinge, nearly four lengths behind his rival, but the quick ground here is a massive plus.

Mutakayyef won the Group 2 Summer Mile here last season on similar ground before a good third in the Juddmonte International behind Postponed. He was behind Ribchester in Meydan but will love this surface.

American Patriot is a Grade 1 winner in the US, is in form and gets his ground.

Selections: 13 Ribchester, 10 Lightning Spear, 11 Mutakeyyef, 1 American Patriot

R2 Coventry Stakes

Brother Bear was a superb winner of the Listed Marble Hill Stakes at the Curragh without looking comfortable on the soft ground. Jessica Harrington’s Kodiac colt won on debut on quick ground and looks top class.

Prince Of The Dark was green but highly impressive in a good novice race at Bath on very quick ground. Clive Cox has a superb batch of juveniles and the cheekpieces may help him progress. By Lethal Force he is bred for speed.

Aqabah won on quick ground at Ascot on debut in a very quick time but just didn’t handle the conditions behind Brother Bear and Charlie Appleby applies a hood.

De Bruyne Horse overcame the draw to win impressively in a strong race at Epsom which is often a good trial for Royal Ascot.

Selections: 3 Brother Bear, 13 Prince Of The Dark, 1 Aqabah, 6 De Bruyne Horse

R3 King’s Stand Stakes

Marsha finished off last season winning the Abbaye before becoming the first filly since Lochsong to carry a penalty and win the Palace House at Newmarket. She travelled supremely well and just got to the front too early but then showed a great attitude, she heads a smart bunch of UK and Irish sprinters.

Lady Aurelia demolished the field in the Queen Mary at last year’s Royal Ascot before winning the Group 1 Prix Morny and then third in the Cheveley Park. That showed she is perhaps better over this trip. She has serious speed and won first up in the US for Wesley Ward.

Priceless didn’t settle when fifth in the Palace House but was a good winner of the Temple Stakes. She’s quick, improving and likes fast ground.

Washington DC was only a neck behind Marsha in the Palace House but ran below form from a bad draw in the Temple Stakes. He can leave that form behind.

Selections: 16 Marsha, 18 Lady Aurelia, 17 Priceless, 14 Washington DC

R4 St James’s Palace Stakes

Barney Roy was only having his third start and was still a touch green when a length second to Churchill in the Guineas. Not much went right, he didn’t settle, stumbled in the dip and the son of Excelebration could have done with a quicker pace. He remains of huge potential.

Churchill is a thorough professional and just keeps on taking all before him, completing the British and Irish 2000 Guineas double. The son of Galileo was the leading juvenile last season with two Group 1 wins including the Dewhurst.

Thunder Snow, winner of the UAE Derby, showed his Kentucky Derby antics were possibly a one-off when second to Churchill at the Curragh. He possibly needs further and was also behind the favourite in the Dewhurst.

Lancaster Bomber is very underrated and hated the ground at the Curragh. He’s regularly behind his stablemate Churchill but gets his ground.

Selections: 1 Barney Roy, 2 Churchill, 8 Thunder Snow, 4 Lancaster Bomber

R5 Ascot Stakes

Who Dares Wins was third in the Coral Cup at Cheltenham and then when things didn’t go for him back on the Flat in the Chester Cup, he still ran a good fourth staying on late. This track and the extra distance should be much more suitable and he’s potentially a big improver on the Flat.

Thomas Hobson won four of his last five for John Gosden in 2013 before going hurdling for Willie Mullins. He was down the field in the Coral Cup but was subsequently impressive at Fairyhouse and his trainer believes he needs a trip.

Yorkidding is in great form and relishes a test of stamina. Second in the Chester Cup and won on quick ground at Haydock.

Beyond Conceit was fourth in the Goodwood Stakes over this trip when with Andrew Balding and has since been successful over hurdles for Nicky Henderson.

Selections: 14 Who Dares Wins, 4 Thomas Hobson, 5 Yorkidding, 18 Beyond Conceit

R6 Windsor Castle Stakes

Declarationofpeace ran a huge race on debut when getting no cover and racing too freely. He duly delivered in style next start at Dundalk. Aidan O’Brien won this two years ago with Washington DC and this War Front colt looks another with huge promise.

Nookta Sound, by Lonhro, represents Wesley Ward who won this in 2009 and 2014. She won with plenty in hand on debut, typically looks a ball of speed and Frankie Dettori is booked.

Elizabeth Darcy won unchallenged on debut and is another Ward runner who possesses typical blistering speed.

Dragons Tail improved massively from his debut when winning at Chester in a really quick time.

Selections: 10 Declarationofpeace, 24 Nookta Sound, 22 Elizabeth Darcy, 11 Dragons Tail
