Royal Ascot Day 4 Previews

 Jun 23 2017

Check out all of the TAB.com.au markets for Day 4 of the Royal Ascot Carnival here.

R1 Albany Stakes

Alpha Centauri is two from two for Jessica Harrington stepping up from her Naas maiden win with a Listed success at the same track. She couldn’t have been more impressive and is a powerfully built Mastercraftsmen filly.

Clemmie, sister of Churchill, took the same route as her brother when third in a traditionally strong Curragh maiden where she caught the eye making late progress. She will improve significantly for the run.

Fairyland was a winner at Keeneland on debut and is clearly respected for Wesley Ward and Coolmore.

Ertiyad was second to Queen Mary 11th Mrs Gallagher on debut in a race where the third and fifth have won since. She followed up in a Haydock maiden despite being seemingly inconvenienced by the ground.

Selections: 2 Alpha Centauri, 5 Clemmie, 9 Fairyland, 8 Ertiyad

R2 King Edwards VII Stakes

Crystal Ocean stepped up considerably from a Nottingham maiden win to finish third behind Permian and Benbatl in the Derby. By Sea The Stars and the way he stayed on at York he’s looks the type to just keep on improving as he steps up in trip.

Intern, formerly with David Wachman, came from off a slow pace with a good second onhis first run for Ralph Beckett in the Sandown Classic Trial. He should only improve for a stronger gallop and a stiffer test.

Khalidi broke the course record at Goodwood in the Cocked Hat Stakes before running no race when supplemented for the Derby. That probably came too soon and he could easily bounce back here.

Permian has had a fine season, finishing second in the Epsom Derby Trial to Cracksman before winning a Listed race at Newmarket and then the Dante. However he subsequently ran no race in the Derby.

Selections: 4 Crystal Ocean, 7 Intern, 8 Khalidi, 9 Permian

R3 Commonwealth Cup

Harry Angel was beaten first up by Blue Point in a Group 3 at this track but had to concede weight due to his Group 2 penalty from his Mill Reef win at Newbury last year. However he was then sensational in a second Group 2 win when smashing the course record in the Sandy Lane at Haydock. Clive Cox rates him as very special.

Caravaggio was a brilliant winner of last year’s Coventry before easily landing the Group 1 Pheonix at the Curragh. He returned with a sensational turn of foot off a good pace at Naas where he looked like he’d progressed physically over the winter. Unbeaten now in 5 he’s hugely exciting for Aidan O’Brien.

Blue Point beat Harry Angel here after ending last season trying further when third in the Dewhurst behind Churchill at Newmarket. However he may struggle to confirm placings with Harry Angel.

Bound For Nowhere is respected for Wesley Ward, unbeaten in two, but faces some exciting home sprinters.

Selections: 4 Harry Angel, 3 Caravaggio, 1 Blue Point, 2 Bound For Nowhere

R4 CoronatIon Stakes

Winter was a superb winner of the 2000 Guineas and then completed the double in the Irish equivalent in devastating style. The daughter of Galileo sets a clear benchmark and with her not having a hard race at the Curragh is difficult to oppose.

Dabyah was a smart winner of the Fred Darling when allowed to dominate, making it three wins from four. Unfortunately injury forced her out of the French 1000 Guineas but she remains an exciting prospect for John Gosden.

Tomyris beat Sibilance into third in a good Listed race at York on soft. She’ll be better on a quicker surface and while this is a huge step forward she’ll only progress for Roger Varian.

Precieuse won the French 1000 Guineas and brings high-class form but she does look to be at her best in testing conditions.

Selections: 7 Winter, 1 Dabyah, 6 Tomyris, 4 Precieuse

R5 Queen’s Vase

Desert Skyline has raced well in Listed company at Newmarket and off a high weight in a fast run handicap at Epsom. He’s probably got the best form coming into this and on breeding he looks an improver over this stiffer test.

Stradivarius has been nicely progressive in good races and was only just headed late on at Chester. He was still staying on well to the line and should appreciate the extra distance.

Fierce Impact, a Deep Impact colt, has been crying out for a step up in trip and comes here off the back of a second to course record breaking Khalidi at Goodwood.

Wisconsin represents Aidan O’Brien, who also trains Belgravia, and has won three of the last 4 renewals. Second string on jockey bookings but a Deep Impact colt who has more upside at this trip and the cheekpieces will help him focus.

Selections: 4 Desert Skyline, 11 Stradivarius, 6 Fierce Impact, 13 Wisconsin

R6 Duke Of Edinburgh Handicap

Appeared had clearly improved for his gelding operation when a clear cut winner over this track and distance first up. Roger Varian is a master at improving older horses and this five-year-old is potentially of Group class.

Mainstream, in the colours of The Queen, is trained by Sir Michael Stoute who has won this three times in the last 10 years. He’s a model of consistency but is costing himself wins with his failure to settle. His third to Frontiersman was a good first up run since being gelded and he’s full of talent.

Wadigor, stablemate of Appeared, has been very impressive in three wins. Clearly this is a big step up and he’s only raced in small fields in slower run races, however he is potentially extremely well handicapped.

Oasis Fantasy was only having his third start since joining David Simcock when third at York on soft ground. He’s previously struggled in two runs in Meydan and with the sign that he’s coming back to form and now on a quicker surface, he looks on a good mark.

Selections: 10 Appeared, 17 Mainstream, 5 Wadigor, 18 Oasis Fantasy
