Mill Reef headlines Newbury

 Sep 21 2017

Named after the great racehourse Mill Reef, the last two renewals have been worthy to honour his name as Ribchester and Harry Angel have gone on to dominate their divisions at an elite level.

It remains to be seen which if any of this year’s entries will go on to the very top level at the age of three, however what we do have is a very competitive renewal.

George Scott’s James Garfield won his maiden on quick ground before a Group 2 fourth in a very strong renewal of the Vintage Stakes and then was defeated by a nose at this level at York. Those last two were over 1400 metres and he looks ideally suited by this drop in trip.

James Garfield gets a narrow verdict but there’s not a lot between him, Invincible Army and Enjazaat.

A lot of the key form revolves around Cardsharp, who Invincible Army was just in front of when second in the Gimcrack before a comfortable Group 3 win at Kempton. He doesn’t like soft ground and drying conditions would be a real bonus before a possible tilt at the Breeders Cup.

The Owen Burrows-trained Enjazaat is two from four, he was a smooth winner of a Ripon Listed raced and is highly-rated by his trainer.

Nebo, trained by Charlie Hills, is twice placed in Group 2’s. He didn’t race up to his best when sixth in the Gimcrack last start and is perhaps better on easier ground.

It’s an intriguing renewal of the Mill Reef Stakes, live on Sky Racing 1 on Saturday night.
