Waldgeist set for Cumberland success

 Oct 5 2017

Ascot’s Group 3 Gigaset Cumberland Lodge Stakes looks there for Waldgeist’s taking after the three-year-old colt has boasted some strong albeit unlucky Group 1 form against his own age this season.

The son of Galileo resumed with a second in a Group 2 at Saint-Cloud before a luckless second in the French Derby behind Brametot. He was just worn down in the dying strides after being stuck in traffic for quite some time and with a clear run he would surely have built an unassailable lead.

He was subsequently fourth in the Irish Derby and again things just didn’t pan out for him in the run behind Capri and Cracksman. This time Waldgeist got too far back off a slow pace, however it was a high class renewal with Capri going on to win the St Leger and Cracksman winning both the Great Voltigeur and the Prix Niel in scintillating fashion.

Indeed the best form from this year’s batch of three-year-old colts all revolves around Cracksman and despite now taking on his elders, Waldgeist will be very difficult to beat in a race in which his age group have won three of the last four renewals.
