Aljazzi’s time to shine

 Oct 5 2017

A classy field is set to line up in the Group 1 Kingdom Of Bahrain Sun Chariot Stakes but it is Aljazzi who really catches the eye as a filly on the verge of breaking through at the very highest level.

Marco Botti has always held the daughter of Shamardal in the utmost regard and it was not hard to see why with a superb burst of speed to win the Group 3 Atalanta Stakes at Sandown last month.

She won with loads in hand there and is rapidly improving as a four-year-old, while the Sun Chariot has also always been her main aim. She’d had a couple of months off after finishing second at big odds in the Group 2 Duke Of Cambridge Stakes behind Qemah (also runs here) and connections have always felt she’s best with time in between her races.

Aljazzi therefore should be primed after another month break and while Newmarket can be a track that many struggle to handle, she has raced well here in the past including a maiden success.

Older horses have a good record in the Sun Chariot having won six of the last eight renewals and John Gosden’s talented four-year-old mare Persuasive should also prove popular after her latest third in the Group 1 Matron Stakes at Leopardstown.

Aidan O’Brien won this last year with a three-year-old in the form of Alice Springs and will be looking to repeat the trick with Roly Poly. The daughter of War Front sets the standard for her age group here as a dual Group 1 winner this season of the Falmouth Stakes over this track and distance and the Prix Rothschild at Deauville, before a sixth behind Persuasive in the Matron.

Catch the Group 1 Sun Chariot live from Newmarket on Sky Racing 1 on Saturday night.
