Angel to confirm world credentials

 Oct 19 2017

The Clive Cox-trained Harry Angel was snapped up by Godolphin after he smashed the Haydock track record in the Group 2 Sandy Lane Stakes and despite a subsequent defeat to Caravaggio in the Commonwealth Cup here, the colt has been simply sensational in winning the July Cup and the Sprint Cup.

Harry Angel has improved out of all recognition this season. He paid for getting involved in a speed battle with Caravaggio’s pacemaker in the Commonwealth Cup but his jockey Adam Kirby was ahead of the game when not falling for the same trick in the July Cup.

Caravaggio remains the only horse to beat Harry Angel this season and his Newmarket success was no fluke. He was brilliant finishing off a strong pace and needs every yard of the 1200 metres, however he was subsequently well below that level at Newmarket and Deauville. Aidan O’Brien has blamed a change of shoes for those runs and he was much better winning a Group 2 at the Curragh last time. He handled the soft ground that may yet hit Ascot this week but he still doesn’t look the flying machine we thought he was early in the season and the feeling remains Harry Angel has since gone to another level.

Initially it was Caravaggio who was pencilled in for the inaugural TAB Everest but it now looks like Harry Angel who would be the most potent European sprinter for the 2018 renewal. It would be fantastic to see Godolphin head to Australia with the son of Dark Angel and on what we have seen this season there is no reason why he wouldn’t be very competitive.

As far as his rivals are concerned on Saturday it is good to see Quiet Reflection coming back towards her very best and conditions will suit, while last year’s winner The Tin Man and Sprint Cup runner-up Tasleet add plenty of depth.
