O'Brien unleashes Derby favourites at Doncaster

 Oct 26 2017

Saxon Warrior, a beautifully bred son of Deep Impact out of 2011 Moyglare winner Maybe, is unbeaten in two and was hugely impressive winning the Group 2 Beresford Stakes at Naas. He travelled strongly, quickened well and stayed the mile strongly and certainly looks the one to beat.

However he’s joined by stablemate The Pentagon who looks all about stamina. The son of Galileo also made it two in a row winning a Group 3 at Leopardstown and after hitting the line strongly, Ryan Moore struggled to pull him up afterwards. Clearly he will improve now at the mile.

O’Brien will be looking to break the much advertised record of Bobby Frankel’s 25 Group 1 winners in a calendar year, a feat he drew level with last Saturday when Hydrangea won the Champion Fillies & Mares Stakes at Ascot.

There’s plenty of depth in the opposition with John Gosden’s unbeaten Roaring Lion and Martyn Meade’s progressive Chilean. However it is fellow Irish trainer Jim Bolger who has the most likely challenger in the form of the classy Verbal Dexterity.

The son of Vocalised was a good second over an inadequate 1200 metres in the Group 2 Railway Stakes before a dominant win in the Group 1 National Stakes at the Curragh. He clearly enjoyed the testing conditions there but is another who looks likely to only improve over the mile.
