Gloucester Park – FRIDAY NIGHT

Race 5 9:24pm Sydney time – GOLDEN SLIPPER

The Group 1 Golden Slipper is the major event at the meeting and is for the 2yos.

The two horses at the top of the market are Soho Thunderstruck (barrier 1 $2.70) and Franco Edward (barrier 11 $2.80).  Both are trained by Kyle Harper and both horses are owned by Rob Watson – coincidentally it could be a big weekend for Rob, he also owns Soho Tribeca and that horse will start favourite in Saturday night’s Sunshine Sprint at Albion Park.

Albion Park – SATURDAY NIGHT

Race 6 7:41pm SUNSHINE SPRINT

The Group 2 Sunshine Sprint is final lead up to next week’s Group 1 Blacks A Fake at Albion Park.  This is the second of three Saturday nights that make up the Brisbane Winter Carnival.

The dominant favourite is Soho Tribeca at $1.55 after drawing barrier 9.  They start 7 off the front at Albion Park, while the second favourite My Field Marshal ($5.00) has drawn barrier 10.  The pair last clashed in the Len Smith Mile at Menangle.  Soho Tribeca was the odds on favourite in that event but galloped out at the start.

Race 5 7:11pm QUEENSLAND OAKS

The Group 2 Queensland Oaks is very open this year and it basically has become a ‘locals versus interstaters’ challenge.  The early favourite for the race is the Victorian trained Goodtime Heaven.  The Courtney Slater trained filly won the NSW Breeders Challenge last start after being forced to race outside the leader.

Leading local trainer Grant Dixon dominated night one of the carnival and he is the trainer of the second favourite Fame Assured and it will start from barrier 4.

Race 7 8:11pm QUEENSLAND TROTTERS CUP

The Group 2 Queensland Trotters Cup has attracted a number of interstate trotters including one of the best square gaiters in the country Tough Monarch.  Trained by Rickie Alchin, the 6yo gelding won last Saturday night under mobile conditions but will start off a 40 metre handicap this week.  He has had issues with his manners in the past.

The second favourite is the locally trained Needle.  She finished third behind Tough Monarch last week and starting off the front mark this week she does look well served at the handicaps for this feature event.

Brittany Graham and Greg Hayes will be trackside for the coverage on Saturday night on Sky 1

Tabcorp Park Menangle – SATURDAY NIGHT

The Breeders Challenge Finals were run on Sunday July 1.  At Menangle on Saturday the Breeders Challenge Blue Finals will be run.  Just to give you some idea what the difference between the two series are.

To be eligible for the Breeders Challenge a foal must be at least 50% NSW bred, that is, either its sire is based in NSW during the season of service or the mare is served and foals in NSW they become eligible.

To be Breeders Challenge Blue a foal must be 100% NSW bred. Therefore the sire physically stood in NSW in the season of conception, the dam was served or inseminated in NSW and the foal born in NSW and notified to HRNSW.

So the Breeders Challenge Blue Finals are for horses totally bred in NSW

Race 4 6:52pm BREEDERS CHALLENGE BLUE FINAL 2YO FILLIES

The Group 2 Breeders Challenge Blue Final sees Kept In Play backing up from the Group 1 Breeders Challenge Final.  She has tremendous gate speed and while James Rattray opted for cover in the Group 1  he may look to hold the lead in this race.

Brooklyns Best is an interesting runner.  She has been in plenty of races this season and was surprisingly disappointing in the semi finals of the Breeders Challenge when she last raced at Menangle.

Race 5 7:18pm BREEDERS CHALLENGE BLUE FINAL 2YO COLTS AND GELDINGS

The Group 2 Breeders Challenge Blue Final for the baby boys is a race in two according to the market with Lets Go To Brazil the narrowest of favourites currently at $2.50.  The second favourite in the race is Major Roll at $2.60

Race 6 7:48pm BREEDERS CHALLENGE BLUE FINAL 3YO FILLIES

The Group 2 Breeders Challenge Blue final for the 3yo fillies is set to be dominated by Shes Sporty.  The David Kennedy trained filly has won her past two races comfortably and actually won the 2yo Breeders Challenge Blue Final last season.

Race 7 8:18pm BREEDERS CHALLENGE BLUE FINAL 3YO COLTS AND GELDINGS

The Group 2 Breeders Challenge Blue Final for the 3yo colts and geldings is a very open event with equal favourites currently.  Bracken Sky and Everybodylovedray both chased home the best 3yo in Australia, Ignatius, in the Breeders Challenge Final on July 1.

Everybodylovedray is going to be a very nice horse with some experience under his belt but is still learning what the racing game is all about.  Racing against the likes of Ignatius would have been good for him.
