Cabeirian chases confidence builder

BRISBANE Aug 13 2017

Promising Gold Coast three-year-old Cabeirian will head across the border to Lismore in search of confidence-building win.

Cabeirian has been a star at the trials and Gold Cold Coast trackwork but his two race starts have been marked by bad luck.

Gary Doughty, husband of trainer Kelly Doughty, is a part-owner of Cabeirian who he rates highly.

"He does have ability but at his first start he was, well lets just say, boyish. He got behind a filly in the parade ring and that was it for the day. His mind was on other things," Doughty said.

"So we spelled him and gelded him. He came back a different horse and trialled well at Doomben two weeks ago."

Cabeirian was scratched from Doomben on Saturday when he drew a wide barrier and will race at Lismore on Tuesday.

"We had already accepted for Lismore in a three-year-old maiden. He is BOBS bonus horse and the race suits him," Doughty said.

"We will let him roll along and use his natural speed. We want to get a confidence-building win with him and then head back to town."

Stablemate Where's That Dragon is heading to the breeding barn this spring.

Where's That Dragon is a half sister to the Doughtys' stayer Arki and has won eight races and nearly $240,000 prize money.

She finished fourth at Doomben two weeks ago on a track which was verging on fast.

"As it stands the tracks are too hard for her and the breeding season is fast approaching," Doughty said.

Arki is still undergoing rehabilitation so he can return to racing.

He won five races in a row last year but has been dogged by tendon problems.

He has been undergoing intensive therapy in Victoria and Doughty is hopeful he can get back to the races this season.
